There are some things in life which are so good they are almost dangerous. Try tasting a really top class toffee cappuccino, staying in a 5 star hotel or wearing tailor made clothes and you will realise that going back to weak coffee, dingy hotels and ill fitting jeans just isn’t on.

The same sort of thing applies with holidays, and if you give French holidays a try you could find that you end up going back every year because nowhere else quite matches up to it. Are trips to France really that good? Let’s see if we can see they are so popular with so many people.

The Countryside or the City

France is famous as being a country with a beautiful and accessible countryside. If you are staying fairly rurally then you can breathe in some fresh air and enjoy some lovely walks through villages and country lanes. Of course, you will also find amazing cities such as Paris, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Lyon and Marseille. Each of the regions and cities has different charms and activities for you to enjoy. You could enjoy the beach, the markets, the museums, the rivers and even the Eiffel Tower. You are probably now starting to see you could turn visiting France into an ongoing obsession

The Food

No discussion about France is complete with looking at the culinary delights the country offers.  From a classy meal in a top restaurant to a rustic baguette in a county bakery, there are great meals on offer for every taste and budget. Many tourists who spend time in France end up getting hooked on French cooking and learning some of the recipes to make for friends at home. You will find some of the classic Gallic dishes on offer but you may also be surprised to find others which you have not heard of before.

The People

The French people sometimes get a bit of a bad reputation but the overwhelming majority of visitors find them to be polite and charming. Of course, as with any country, you will find a difference between attitudes in the big cities and the small villages. If you want to find the best French hospitality you should stick to smaller towns.

A Great Place to Live?

Going on holiday to France might change your life more than by just giving you a new favourite holiday destination. Lots of tourists end up falling in love with the lifestyle and consider living there permanently. These days it is relatively easy to do and if you really want to make a big change in your life then this could be just what you need. More and more people are doing this, and you can find some inspiring and heart warming stories both online and in published books. It may seem like a bold move now but once you head over and see what is on offer you might just need to listen to your heart and go ahead with the big move to a new country.

As a working mum, I’m usually much busier than I’d like to be and often spending quality time with my kids is limited to the weekends. During our family holidays we usually choose camping trips in Europe.

Last week I was talking to some of the other parents as we waited for the kids outside the school gates, and given that it was a grey, rainy day, we got onto the subject of holidays. When I mentioned that camping is our top choice for family holidays, everyone wanted to learn more. One of the big questions was “How do you keep the kids entertained?”.

Actually, we’ve found that bored kids are the last thing we have to worry about on our family holidays. We always choose camp-sites which have plenty of interesting activities to try out and a good variety of facilities (a swimming pool is always essential!), as well as supervised kids clubs, so there is plenty to keep us all occupied. Not only that, but we make time to take do some family activities which get us closer to nature, as we feel it is important to teach our kids to respect the environment that they are enjoying.

One of our favourite activities during family holidays is birdwatching. Now, you might wonder how you’d ever get a usually high-energy child to sit quietly for long enough to spot any of our feathered friends but you’d be surprised. Our son, who is very sporty and always likes to be on the go was spellbound when he first watched Red Kites during a holiday in France, and it was there that he really caught the birdwatching “bug”. Getting kids interested in nature can be a hobby that lasts a lifetime, and though you might have to wait very patiently  there will be moments that are truly, naturally, magic. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to try birdwatching – we started out with a pamphlet about native species from the tourist information centre, and a cheap pair of binoculars, and it is very rewarding as you learn to identify different birds, or spot something rare!

Another activity which our kids love is our annual treasure hunt. This takes my husband and I several hours (and a few glasses of local wine) to plan one night when the kids go to bed. The basic premise is that we hide clues around the vicinity of our tent or chalet, and the kids have to use them to figure out how to get the prize. We’ve also recently discovered Geocaching, an international treasure hunting game with countless players. In this, you use GPS co-ordinates listed by other players to locate “caches” all over the world. We’ve found that these are often in scenic locations, giving us the chance to see some of the best bits of the countries we are visiting.

Do we get ever get bored during our family holidays? Most definitely not, in fact we always find ourselves saying that we wish we could stay for longer! In fact, I’d recommend camping in Europe for any family looking for a fun holiday in a peaceful natural setting.

10 Things to Know Before Travelling

When preparing for a lengthy trip away from home, there is an endless list of things to remember to make sure you are fully prepared for every eventuality. Whilst the main priority when travelling is to have fun, read on to find out about 10 things you should definitely know before embarking on your adventure of a lifetime:

Take plenty of cash

It may sound obvious, but it’s vital to make sure you have enough cash with you, especially if you’re going to under developed, remote areas where there aren’t many banks or you won’t have many opportunities to get more if you need it.

Take Euros and Dollars

Despite having a defined currency, some places (particularly in SE Asia) like different currencies and, while you can generally change most currencies over at exchange shops, some places are quite particular about what they accept. If you’re travelling widely, having a supply of both euros and dollars in particular should mean you’re equipped in the majority of countries.

Don’t lose your receipts

It’s also worth keeping all of the receipts you collect while travelling as, very occasionally, an airport official might ask to see proof of your transactions. It’s better to be safe than sorry, after all.

Be careful where you get your taxis

Always get your taxis from official taxi stands, not from people who come up to you in the airport and other public places offering you their services as these can offer charge highly inflated prices.

Be vigilant with visas

If you’ve ever been to a country that requires a visa, you’ll know that the whole process can be quite stressful. Make sure you sort out all necessary visas in good time before you travel and ensure you take all your paperwork with you – and be prepared for varying experiences depending on the countries you’re going to.

Don’t forget insurance

Travel insurance is something you should always have when going away. If you don’t have it and then something goes wrong, you could end up stranded. Comprehensive travel insurance, on the other hand, should cover you for most situations. Specialist backpacker or Annual travel insurance deals are most suited to frequent and prolonged travel enthusiasts. A quick trawl of the internet will yield a number of cheap online holiday insurance deals available to suit even the most stringent of traveller’s budgets so it doesn’t have to be an expensive extra.

Consider upgrades and air miles

It’s sometimes possible to upgrade your plane seat from economy to premium or first class. You’ll generally have to pay to do this, but if you have air miles to use, you might be able to do it really easily. It’s definitely something to consider when you’re faced with a long flight.

Check out local transport

Research local transport before you go away; in some countries the buses are better than the trains or vice versa. It’s worth knowing which will be better for you in advance.

Be wary of body language and gestures

You should also be careful of your body language, as some gestures that might seem innocuous or unconsciously done to you might be rather insulting to other cultures. Do a bit of research before you go to make sure you won’t be accidentally disrespecting anyone.

Attitude is important

Finally, a friendly attitude will get you a long way when travelling. Make sure you’re firm in saying no if you get asked to do something you’d rather not do, but generally being friendly and nice will endear you to the locals – especially if you make an effort to speak their language.

For the more adventurous and nature lovers, Canada offers some of the best vacationing areas in the world. Winters are wonderful in Canada; with snow clad mountains and skiing “highways”. Adventure and relaxation in cities, parks and mountains of Canada can be an everlasting memory, if planned and budgeted properly.

Most favored vacationing spots in Canada are the British Columbia, Victoria, Alberta, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Islands. The majestic coastal mountains of British Columbia house some of the North America’s largest ski resorts, Blackcomb and Whistler Mountain. These towering mountains heighten to about a mile from the valley and are strewn with skiing trails for all levels. They have about 200 trails covering more than 7,000 acres of treacherous mountain terrain.

These skiing trails are often rated high when compared to popular, expensive and always over booked resorts like Colorado, Vail and Aspen. This is due to the magnificent ski slopes and a host of pedestrian-only villages that have multiple shops, restaurants and a variety of nightlife. The best part of the Whistler Resort is its social and community atmosphere. Added to this the value of US dollar in Canada contributes to the attraction of skiers from across the globe.

Glacier National Park is another of the major tourist and vacationing attraction. Known for its breath-taking views of waterfalls, lakes and high mountains and covering about a million acres, this Crown of the Continent” is very sparsely populated compared to the Yellowstone or Yosemite national parks in the USA. This house of the grizzly is all the more attractive because of the wildlife which is another major attraction for vacationers is Canada. The wildlife spotting in Canada can be exhilarating when one spots a wolf, mountain lion or a Rocky Mountain sheep.

Planning your vacation in Canada can be very easy and low budget considering a host of vacation rentals and private accommodation available across the most sought after tourist destinations.

Many vacation rentals offer a choice of vacation homes, condos, villas, and cabins to meet various needs and tastes of the vacationers. Many of these vacation rentals are also well staffed. Out for offering are pet friendly rentals, vacation rentals on the beach or close to the water, child friendly vacation rentals, vacation homes on a golf course or close to one, ski vacation rentals on the mountain or located close to the chairlift.

Cottages are a preferred mode of vacation rentals in Canada. Many people dive to cottages for the hammock-swaying snoozes, exceptional natural air quality and outdoor pursuits. The distance from millions in a crowded city is to soothe ones nerves in natural surroundings of most of Canadas known tourist attractions have made them the favorite of vacationers.
Renting a vacation home or cottage is easy, pay the rent for as many weeks as you need. You can rent direct form the owner or through various rental agents strewn all over the place. Choices are easy to make using the book or a brochure available with most agents. The only disadvantage compared to a hotel is that you may end up doing most of the housework, if the vacation home or the private accommodation is not staffed.
The cost of renting or leasing a vacation home or private accommodation is very nominal compared to the cost of hotels. Many owners have turned towards part time renting their properties due to rising cost of real estate and cost of living.
The private accommodation and vacation home renting can bring down your costs of vacationing in the skiing paradise down drastically, allowing you to budget more for your shopping or adventure needs, or even to extend your holiday a little more.

Italy Vacation

Italy Vacation A Walk with Michelangelo – Travel Tips

For great vacation ideas, I highly recommend Italy! Here are a few things that you should know before you go because Italy is very different from many of the places that you may have traveled to before. In the US, anything goes but this is not so in Italy. Knowing these things before hand will help you have a more successful trip.

Traveling to Italy
When you are getting ready for your trip, think about what medications you need to pack and how much of each medication you need. You cant always find your medicines in Italy. Drugs that are common and easy-to-find here, may not be available in Italy. Make sure that you pack yourself a kit with all of the medicines that you may need for both on the plane and while traveling. Remember to pack over-the-counter medicines too. Leave all medications in their original containers!

Dinning Out in Italy
While you are in Italy remember to drink only drink bottled water NOT tap water. In an Italian restaurant it is good to know that what you order is what you get. There are not a lot of extras like salad, soup and choice of potato that automatically come with every meal. There are not many special requests in restaurants in Italy. They frown on changing your mind when your order comes and also on sending your order back. It is always safe to order spaghetti. Use a spoon and fork to twirl your spagetti rather than cutting it. Cutting your spaghetti is bad table manners in Italy. Do not wait for your check if you are eating out either. You need to ask for your check to receive it. Remember to tip with cash in Italy. If you are looking for fast food in Italy, try a pizza shop, or pizzeria. Most of the restaurants in Italy are sit-down restaurants with several different courses. And no one, absolutely no one eats dinner before 9 pm!

Site Seeing
Some of the sites and attractions in Italy are absolutely breathtaking and you will want to remember them forever. There are rules for some of the places that you travel to such as taking pictures. Not all of the places will allow you to take pictures (especially museums) and if you are allowed, you are probably cant use a flash. Its always safe to buy postcards.

Clothing
Italians love to dress up everyday, everywhere. Leave your shorts, tank tops and flip flops at home. If you plan to visit the Vatican, the dress code is very strict. No bare shoulders, no bare legs. There is a booth selling paper clothes for anyone who forgets the Vatican dress code! So dress up in Italy and get ready to have fun!

Home Sweet Home
Travel is great isnt it? And when you get home you organize all your pictures and souvenirs. And you think, wouldnt it be great if I could find a beautiful Italian Flag to remember my vacation by that doesnt cost too much to add to my whole vacation experience? Well, Ive found a great site that sells great looking flags for not a lot of money and their shipping is super fast www.FlagWave.com

Given National Park status in 1951, Dartmoor sits in the south of county Devon, southwest England, and covers an area of 365 square miles. Almost half the park is swampland, a haven for wildlife and those wishing to escape the rigours of city life.

Dartmoor Forest, owned by the Duchy of Cornwall since 1307, is a former royal hunting ground and makes up the vast majority of the region. The grass and heather moors are littered with hefty granite boulders scattered amongst the rolling hills. Wild ponies graze among the barren hills; despite running wild, all have human owners and are gathered annually each autumn.

Approximately 10% of the moor is woodland, much of it running along the tranquil river valleys. Stone circles and burial chambers are testament to Dartmoor’s historic and enigmatic past. Indeed, Dartmoor is famous not only for its beautiful landscapes. It was within the little village of Grimspound that Sherlock Holmes found himself investigating the hound of the Baskervilles.

Dartmoor was one of Europe’s biggest tin mining areas back in the 12th century. The stone built homes of the miners can still be found along many of the regions streams and rivers.

Abbot’s Way runs across the southern part of the moor, racing across wild country and moorland bogs. The region is thought to be named after the abbots who are thought to have used this path when travelling between Buckland Abbey and Buckfast Abbey. Man’s presence over the ages is evident in this barren land. Hut circles dating back to the Bronze and Iron ages remain today.

South of Abbots Way sits Harford Moor. The Middle Ages drew tin miners from far and wide seeking riches below the surface. Today visitors are drawn by the vast wilderness and wildlife. A medieval cross adorns Harford Church, one of many in the area which once served as signposts for those travelling across the moors.

Becky Falls Woodland Park first opened to the public in 1903. Some of the most enjoyable walks in England’s southwest can be had here amongst the delightful waterfalls and huge granite.

To the west is Upper Plym Valley and a beautiful array of plants and wildlife. The tracks in these parts are somewhat easier to navigate than many others in the moors and provide much of interest along the way. The spectacular moorland scenery is interspersed with abandoned tin mines dating back over a century and various prehistoric relics including stone and hut circles.

Alaska: A Grand Destination

Most Americans would love to see Alaska, but have never gotten the chance to do so. There are many scenic pictures that can help to captivate the feeling that one might have when rolling across the crisp white snow with a dog-drawn sled. For the most part, it is not hard to find a picture or two of the pristine valleys and rivers, but to really see the land and wildlife up close and personal is a whole different story!

If and when you get the chance to step foot on the beautiful land that is known as Alaska, there are a few places that you will not want to miss on your journey. Listed below are a few of the most popular destinations while visiting Alaska.

If you ever get the chance to take a cruise to Alaska, it is absolutely recommended! There are many beautiful coastal cities that you can view on your way around Alaska, including: Skagway, Juneau and Fairbanks. When you get a look at the view from the deck of a ship, it is a scene that you will likely never forget.

The forests of Alaska can be just as memorable as the well known wildlife that calls it home. There are many glaciers and icebergs found in Alaska. For many visitors, it can be a very peaceful and surreal experience to visit Alaska. According to scientists, the glaciers of Alaska (with the exception of one) are shrinking in size, so if you want to see them for yourself, time is of the essence. They may seem huge right now, but in many years, they may well be a part of the water that surrounds Alaska.

If you are like most travelers, then one of the first things you may think of when someone mentions Alaska are the incredible mountains. Though there are many photographs of these mountains floating around, there is nothing like the incredible view in person!

Aside from the scenic points of view in Alaska, certain history is also of important note. If you were inclined, you may want to stop by a saloon or other historical attraction that were known as the building blocks of Alaskas early settlement. Alaska was a key factor in the gold rush, too, so that is also an important part of its history to learn a little more about.

While sightseeing is a big part of the vacation process, it is also equally important to be properly prepared for your trip to Alaska. It is especially imperative that you are aware of the current weather conditions when you are packing and traveling. In a moments notice, it can become quite wet and cold in Alaska, so it is recommended that you keep a jacket near at all times.

In Alaska, there are times of the year that never end; sometimes, the sun doesnt set for weeks at a time! These times of the year really help with the development of Alaskas fruits and vegetables. Alaska is acknowledged as having beautiful crops of lettuce and strawberries.

When you are trying to think of a destination for your next family vacation, remember Alaska! There are a ton of activities and things to see in Alaska, so boredom should never have the chance to set in. If you are making a list of things to do while you are in Alaska, try including these things:

Snowmobiling

Mountain Biking

Hunting

Kayaking

Humpback Whale Watching

Fishing

Helicopter/Plane Tour

Attend Current Festivals

Catch the Moonrise/Moonset

When you are on your vacation in the beautiful land of Alaska, make sure you take plenty of pictures! Be sure to pack enough film and/or memory cards and travel accessories for your camera so that you dont miss a second of your trip.

Now that we have observed everything that makes Alaska so special, I think I am ready to book a cruise. What about you?

Booking your Holiday

There are many ways to go about planning and booking your holiday. You can go into a travel agent and get a package deal, which included flights, car rental, hotel accommodation, and maybe even some of the activities that you would like to do when you get there.

Booking Online

A slightly more adventurous way and time consuming approach is to go online and find out what is available. Book your own flights, find your own hotel, arrange your own car rental, and do what you choose. This method of holiday planning requires a lot more effort from you. You have to be prepared to come with your own destination, then research on the various flight offers that are available and make sure you a get a good deal, you also have to look up hotels in the area and find a good hotel at a good price that is in the area and with the amenities you want.

Then car rental will also have to be arranged separately. Also you should not forget the need to book travel insurance and find out if there are any medical procedures that are required if you are going to a more exotic or tropical location. The good news is that many website now specialise in helping you to do all of this for yourself and will be a good source of information on every step of the process. These days you will probably be able to book all of the necessary elements of your holiday from the same website.

You will also have the chance of saving a considerable amount of money since you will be able to seek out special deals and offers and take advantage of discounts that are available. You will also have the freedom to completely personalise every aspect of your trip. If youd like to fly into one airport and out of another, or stay part of the time at one hotel and part of the time at another, or any other personalisation will be completely possible since you are arranging every aspect of the trip to your own requirements.

Be Aware

There are a few things you should remember if you are planning your own holiday. First of all, you should make sure that the plans you have come up with actually are saving you money when compared to package deals, then you should also make sure you are dealing with trustworthy websites and that you have got proper travel and health insurance.

The other option is always just to go to the airport, hop on an available flight and see where you end up!

Beach Holidays for Fun in the Sun

Everyone loves beach holidays! The little ones can dig in the sand and splash in the lapping waves. The older ones can swim, get a tan, or just relax. The inquisitive types can explore for sea life, tide pools, and drift wood. The warm breezes and natural beauty are invigorating and restorative. Any trip, however, can cause discomfort if you do not plan well. Here are things you can do to make your beach holidays easier, safer, and more meaningful.

In many parts of the world, people head for their beach holidays in the family car. When planning a trip, it’s always a good idea to give the car a good cleaning out first. This will give you more room for your luggage. Stock you glovebox, too, with a few first aid and comfort items, such as sunblock, acetominiphen for headaches, a roll of antacids, a few cough drops, and a few bandaids. Don’t forget a couple of scrunchies or pony-tailers for long hair. Get the tires checked and replace any that are likely to go flat. Get an oil change if it’s getting close. Road trips are not much fun when they include breakdowns. And whatever you do, make sure you have a map and a place to keep it handy.

Travelling with kids is always a challenge. They may be particularly excited and impatient when they know they are going on beach holidays. Make sure they have cool water bottles and healthy snacks to munch. Try a simple car game to make the time pass. Many kids like looking for letters of the alphabet on signs. If several people get involved it can be quite fun.

With beach holidays particularly, there is always a need to provide for skin safety. Be particularly careful about being in the sun for long stretches of time between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Use a sunblock with a high SPF rating and replace it after getting wet or drying off with your towel. The towel you choose can make a difference too. Thick towels get heavy and tend to trap a lot of sand. You may find you like thin towels at the beach. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and some sort of foot protection to keep your feet from being burned on the hot sand.

With a little preparation your beach holidays can be enjoyable and problem-free. When you arrive home you will be relaxed, refreshed, and ready for work. Take a minute to unpack and get your laundry going. It won’t belong until the kids will be shouting, “When can we go on beach holidays again?”
